Your cervix as a guide to your fertility window

What is the cervix and how can it help me get pregnant?

The cervix is the lower most part of the uterus, made of strong muscles. It’s kind of like a tunnel connecting the vagina and uterus. As we go through our cycles, the shape and position changes to prevent or encourage conception. Understanding these changes can help identify your fertile window -the few days leading up to and including ovulation when conception is possible.

How to:

Wash your hands. No ascending bacterial infections thanks.

Get comfortable - squat, sit on the toilet, or put one foot up on a stool.

Slide an index finger inside, aiming slightly back,  you’re searching for the end of the vagina. How does it feel? Easy to reach? Firm or soft?  Closed or open?

What it’s saying:

cervix position fertility window
  • Open. Soft. High. Like touching your lips = most likely around ovulation.

  • Low. Firm. Closed. More like the tip of your nose = most likely outside your fertile window and not ovulating.

  • Somewhere in between = approaching or having past your window.

It’s really tricky

It’ll get easier. Begin by trying this once or twice a week when you know you have plenty of time and privacy. This will really let you get to understand the differences. Journal everything to help see if patterns are emerging.
