I am pregnant
Early pregnancy - the first 12 weeks
The first trimester can be a roller coaster – excitement, nerves, anxiety all while trying to keep your pregnancy symptoms under wraps so as not to give away your news.
We generally like to see women weekly throughout their first 12 weeks. Acupuncture treatments focus on any symptoms you are experiencing – like morning sickness and insomnia and those lesser mentioned ones [link] – as well as support your baby’s health as he or she undergoes one of the most dramatic periods of growth and developmental change they will experience in their lifetime.
If you have experienced recurrent miscarriage, we recommend weekly treatment until week 14.
The Second Trimester - 12-34 weeks
From around weeks 12 to 34, most women feel like they’ve cleared a hurdle and life gets a little easier.
For those women not so lucky, second trimester often includes complaints like:
Morning sickness
Lower back pain
Digestive issues
Carpal tunnel and swelling
Nasal congestion
Insomnia
Anxiety
Acupuncture can be a natural way to address pregnancy complaints, and often only two or three treatments are necessary to keep symptoms at bay.
The end of Third Trimester - 35 weeks
From around 35 weeks, we suggest weekly treatment to prepare physically and emotionally for labour.
Our treatments focus on stress management, building and sustaining energy and ripening the cervix.
As your due date draws nearer, (or passes by) induction acupuncture focuses on preparing the body for labour, using points on the lower legs indicated for softening the cervix, as well as points specific to your needs.
Induction acupuncture treatments will vary in frequency, but generally will increase from weekly at 37 weeks up to every second day by week 41.If baby is mal-positioned or still breech at 34 weeks, we also recommend a course of acupuncture treatment to get baby moving into a good position for labour.
